Háfjallaveiki, óveður og biðin

Tad hefur ymislegt a daga mina drifid i tessum leidangri og ohaett er ad segja ad innistaedan i reynslubankanum hafi haekkad. Likt og komid hefur fram i fyrri faerslum attum vid leeidangursmennirnir saman frabaera tima her i fjallinu. Mikid hlegid, spilad og gantast.

Tegar komid var upp i 5500 m haed vard einn leidangursmadurinn haedarveikur. Leidangursmadurinn beid i Penidentes eftir samferdafelogunum.

Eg kom upp i grunnbudir ad kvoldi til og lenti i ymsum aevintyrum a leidinni. Hitti m.a.

Eins og Edmund Hillary sagdi: “you don’t conquer the mountain, you conquer your self”.

English version:

A lot has been happening in the last few days and you can say that I’ve gained enormous experience that will last for life. As has been covered in the last few posts, my team members and I have had a great time here at Aconcagua. Lots of laughter, playing cards and having fun.

When we reached the camp at 5550 meters, one of our team members encountered rather serious symptoms of high altitude sickness. He had symptoms of Pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) and therefore we needed to descend to lower altitude as quickly as possible. I, along with two members from the mountain rescue team, hiked down with him down to the base camp where he received a medical examination and everything was looking very promising. We were advised to go all the way down the mountain, in order for him to recover quickly. Therefore, we headed down to Penidentes – which was the starting point of our expedition. We had a proper dinner and I took a shower and prepared for going back up the mountain. The next day, I headed back to the base camp, Plaza de Mulas. My team member waited in Penidentes for the rest of our group.

I arrived in the base camp at night and experienced tons of adventure on my way. I met my friend Rob from my South Pole expedition, saw a dog, and walked over a new mudslide. I was rather tired after the hike, but still doing great. It was fun to reunite with my group, but as we have already covered – they had decided to stop the expedition as the weather forecast did not allow for going further up the mountain. Therefore it was clear that they would not be able to summit within their time frame. We said our goodbyes the next day and they headed down towards Penidentes.

I am therefore the only one left here at Aconcagua of our team members and you can say that my journey here was without a doubt more fun while they were still here. Plus, there are only few people left here at base camp as in two days, around 175 people have left the mountain due to the weather. However, I have already made some friends here to talk to and hang out with. But this will still involve a lot of waiting, the next available summit day is around the 26th and maybe not even until January 29th. This waiting can be challenging and it is good to have a great doze of patience 🙂 In these situations, it is up to the mountain and we humans are better off listening and acting accordingly. Like Edmund Hillary said: “you don’t conquer the mountain, you conquer your self”.

Best regards from Aconcagua,
